DOCUMENTED 2025 LEGISLATIVE RESULT
Government affairs advocacy at work
Washington REALTORS® worked with state legislators during the 2025 legislative session as lawmakers considered expanding sales taxes to additional services and increasing certain business taxes.
The outcome: Washington REALTORS® reported that its government affairs team's lobbying helped ensure real estate brokerage services were not directly affected by the sales tax expansion in SB 5814 or the B&O tax increases in HB 2081.
This is a concrete example of how sustained legislative engagement can help protect brokerage services from proposed tax changes. The calculator above illustrates what a hypothetical 6.5% sales tax on gross commission income might look like; it is not a calculation of taxes actually saved through the 2025 legislation.

About this illustration
The 6.5% rate is used solely to illustrate a hypothetical Washington state sales tax on real estate services compensation. It does not represent an existing Washington retail sales tax on real estate commissions, an enacted proposal, or a prediction of future policy. Local sales tax is not included. The illustration assumes the entire entered GCI is the tax base and does not determine who would legally bear a hypothetical tax. The $756 dues and $49 RPAC amounts are illustrative inputs provided for this campaign and may differ by member or year. RPAC contributions are voluntary and not required for REALTOR® membership. Membership dues fund services beyond advocacy. This comparison does not measure actual taxes avoided, guaranteed savings, or an RPAC return on investment.
